PSHE and RSE

                                               Subject Leader - Mrs Beckett

Intent

At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, we understand the importance of PSHE and RSE to enable our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of our society. We focus on developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life.

PSHE is taught across the school from Reception-Year 6 on a weekly basis. As a school, we follow the Scarf (Coram Life) PSHE scheme which includes age appropriate RSE. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.

Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Virtues that we follow.

Implementation

At St Joseph's we use the Coram Life Education Programme ‘SCARF’ to enrich our PSHE themes.

Our PSHE curriculum is taught in discreet weekly sessions using the Scarf half - termly units. These provide clear skills and knowledge progression. They ensure that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

SCARF

The curriculum is broken down into six strands:

Me and my relationships

Valuing difference

Keeping myself safe

Rights and responsibilities

Being my best

Growing and changing

Children explore these strands year-on-year, building a toolkit of strategies and knowledge which they apply in scenario-based lessons, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and practise the skills in a safe and caring environment. The 'Coram Life' staff visit school annually and every child receives the chance to go in and learn about how to keep themselves safe, happy and healthy.

S is for Safety

C is for Caring

A is for Achievement

R is for Resilience

F is for Friendship

We use ‘Journey in Love’ in the summer term, during our ‘Relationship Week’, to support our Catholic values - this runs alongside our topic on ‘Growing and Changing’.

Here is our RSE policy. Here is the powerpoint presentation that we used to introduce the programme to parents when it was launched.

Here is further information about the RSE 'A Journey of Love' curriculum for parents. There is a parent's leaflet for each year group:

SCARF Early Years supports the delivery of the EYFS framework (2021) and Development Matters (2020) guidance, particularly Personal Social, Emotional Development (PSED), and Communication and Language.

Its comprehensive plans form part of a spiral curriculum that provides the essential building blocks needed to meet the DfE's new Relationships Education and Health Education requirements.
